CORBIN — Rain has slowed the play of both the 13th Region Boys and Girls Singles and Doubles Tennis Tournaments, but they were able to get a couple of rounds of action in.
Defending champion Neha Rao is keeping her hopes of winning another singles region title alive by winning her second round match over Harlan County’s Sarah Miles, 6-0, 6-0, after receiving a first round bye. She will now face-off against Clay County’s Bailey Hubbard in third round action.
Corbin’s Catherine Crawford advanced to third round action after collecting a 6-0, 6-0 win over North Laurel’s Makera Prichard in second round play. Crawford also received a first round bye. She will now face-off against Bell County’s Lauren Henson in third round action.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Corbin’s Ellie Jane Carloftis didn’t waste any time advancing to third round action against Clay County’s Mindi Bowling. Carloftis cruised to an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Bell County’s Caitlin Brock in second round action.
Williamsburg’s Rachel Rains is a perfect 2-0 so far and will play Middlesboro’s Taylor Moyers in the third round after picking up a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the first round against Barbourville’s Toni Bingham while cruising to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Lynn Camp’s Shelby Green in the second round.
Corbin’s Jaclyn Jewell and Sydney Ledington have lived up to their top seed billing by winning their second round match, 6-0, 6-0 over South Laurel’s Jones/Durham. They will now face-off against North Laurel’s Kendra Smallwood/Bryanna Ryle in third round play.
Whitley County’s Brittany Fuson/Hallie Jones are in the third round after winning their first round match over Williamsburg’s Tess Perkins/Hannah Byrd, 6-0, 6-0 while winning their second round match against Middlesboro’s Millett/Warren, 4-6, 7-6(5) and 2-0(5). They will play Clay County’s Harmon/Dubbles in third round action.
Whitley County’s Haley Mahan/Anna Grace Zehr will play Corbin’s Emma Kate Carloftis/Julie Crawford in the third round by picking up a 6-4, 6-4 win in first round play against Knox Central’s Shackleford/Pope. They also defeated Clay County’s Cornett/Miller in the second round, 7-5, 6-3. Carloftis/Crawford received a bye in the first round and defeated Harlan’s Browning/Phan, 6-0, 6-0.
North Laurel’s Pooja Kanthawar/Caroline Moore remains alive with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Williamsburg’s Kaitlyn Taylor/Hannah Thomas in second round play. They will now face Middlesboro’s Saylor/Brunsma in third round action.
Top-seeded Danny Butcher didn’t have much trouble advancing to third round play, as the Whitley County Colonel cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Knox Central’s Tyler Crawford. Butcher will now play North Laurel’s Dakota Boggs in the third round. Boggs won his first round match against Harlan’s Matthew Simpson, 6-3, 6-3 before beating Bell County’s Mark Calloway in the second round, 6-0, 6-2.
A third round match-up between Whitley County’s Pete Comparoni and Corbin’s Connor Maguet will take place after both players won their respective matches.
After receiving first round byes, both Comparoni and Maguet won their second round games, 7-6(1), 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively.
Corbin’s Josh Jewell and Seth Heinss will play Middlesboro’s Francis/Robbins in the third round after defeating North Laurel’s Sammy Maggard/Justin Maggard, 6-0, 6-2.
Whitley County’s Chris Tan/Matthew Douglas defeated Bell County’s Barnett/Moyers, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to third round play against Harlan’s Allison/Farley.
North Laurel’s Arjun Kanthawar/Spencer Bolton continue to play well and moved on to third round action against Clay County’s Grigsby/Robinson after defeating Harlan County’s Bailey/Eldridge, 6-2, 6-2.
Corbin’s William Reedy/Harrison Reedy advanced to third round play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Whitley County’s Mikey Johnson/Lucas Moses and will now face-off against Bell County’s Osborne/Miller.
Region tournament action is scheduled to resume today at Corbin High School weather permitting.
