WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets opened the first round of the 13th Region All ‘A’ Classic with a 12-1 win over Oneida Baptist Institute. They will face Jackson County at home today as they try to advance to the semifinals.

Williamsburg head coach John Mountjoy said he was happy with the win and said his team was excited to move on in the All ‘A’ Tournament.

“I’m always happy to get a win and to get a win in the All ‘A’,” he said. “Our kids get excited about this tournament because we’re outsized by a lot of the teams we play.

“With that said, the kids put a lot into this thing so it’s good to see them get to move on,” he added.

OBI took an early 1-0 lead, but the Yellow Jackets made sure that lead didn’t last long with two runs in the bottom of the first to go ahead 2-1.

Williamsburg plated another run in the bottom of the second and three more in the third to push the gap to 6-1 at the end of the third inning.

The Yellow Jackets sealed the win by doubling their offensive output in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating six runs to get the 12-1 win.

Jon Teague and Logan Hamblin led the way for Williamsburg at the plate, collecting two hits and driving in two runs apiece.

After seeing his team explode in the sixth inning, Mountjoy said he was happy with his team on both sides of the ball.

“Our pitching was good and we hit the ball well,” Mountjoy said. “Our bats started out cold and we didn’t get as many hits in the early part, but we came around and scored some runs.

“In the end, we got the win and we’ll host a pretty good Jackson County team in the next game,” he added. “I’m sure they’ll come in here ready to play, so we’ll have to do the same things.”

Today’s game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. at Briar Creek Park in Williamsburg.
