Knox County forces decisive game with 4-1 win over Corbin

CORBIN — By Chris Parsons / Sports Editor

MIDDLESBORO — After a 4-4 win by Knox County Sunday, the Corbin and Knox County 11-year-old All-Stars will face off for the third time in less than a week today, but this time there’s a lot on the line.

The winner of today’s game will advance to the 11-year-old State Tournament.

Corbin had a chance to seal the deal Sunday, but the offense wasn’t anywhere close to what it was Wednesday when Corbin cruised past Knox County, 12-1. A lot of that can be blamed on the stellar effort of Knox County starting pitcher, Jordan Collins.

Collins held Corbin to just three hits through 5 1-3 innings before reaching his limit on pitches allowed at 85. Collins struck out seven batters and walked three.

Knox County took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Collins connected for a one-out single, followed by a double off the bat of Isaac Mills. Both runners eventually scored to give Knox County the 2-0 lead.

Knox County pushed the gap to 3-0 in the second inning Logan McDonald made good on a sacrifice attempt to score Jared Hurst.

All was quiet until the top of the fourth inning when Knox County stretched the lead to 4-0 on an RBI single by Mills, scoring Collins for the second time in the game.

Corbin threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with just one out in the inning, but was down to the final out after Kaylee Morales struck out. Grant Dickerson came through with an RBI single to give Corbin it’s first run of the game, but Quinton Botner grounded in to a fielder’s choice that almost got by the Knox County third baseman to end the game.

The two teams will square off at 6 p.m. at the Middlesboro Little League Complex.
