SOUTH LONDON — Just call them, “The comeback kids.”

The Corbin Grey 9-10 year-old All-Star team has a knack of rallying during their stay in the Area 2 9-10 year-old All-Star Tournament, and it wasn’t any different during Wednesday’s 13-9 come from behind win over South London.

South London jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, and it looked as if Mike Garland’s squad was going to cruise to an easy win, but Corbin Grey fought back, scoring two runs in the second inning, seven runs in the third inning, three runs in the fifth inning, and one run in the sixth inning to move one game closer to the District Tournament.

“We’ve talked all year about not quitting, and these kids, that’s the one they they don’t do, they don’t quit,” Corbin Grey coach Tony Combs said. “It seems like we’ve dug a hole every game, and just keep telling them, to not quit.

“The boys just stuck with it and I’m real proud of them,” he added. “We’ve got one more game, at least, so we can move on.”

Corbin Grey took control of the game in the third inning by sending 10 players to the plate while scoring seven runs.

Jacob Baker, Josh Werner, Parker Norvell, Mark Warren and Austin Wise each connected with hits during the inning.

“We’ve got mostly nine and 10 year-olds, and they believe,” Combs said. “They’ve heard it before and they believe they can do that. With these kids, we work with positive attitudes. We told them before the game today, if we mess up, don’t worry about it. The good thing about baseball, is you get another chance to redeem yourself.”

Corbin Grey put the game away after taking a 9-5 lead in the third inning by scoring three more runs in the fifth inning, while adding an insurance run in the sixth.

“Baseball is a game of momentum. If you get the momentum, it starts going. I tell them hitting is contagious. Somebody has got to start us and once somebody starts another follows through with it, and the guys hit pretty good.”

Ryan Peace led Corbin Grey with three runs scored and two hits while Norvell also scored twice.
