Moving On: South London wins sets up elimination game with Corbin

SOUTH LONDON — Mike Garland’s South London 9-10 year-old All-Stars had their backs against the wall after losing to Clay County Monday, and they responded in fine fashion, remaining alive for another day in the Area Tournament by upending North Laurel Green, 12-2.

“I’m really proud of the way we played,” Garland said. “I only wasted one pitcher today, so we’ll have most of our pitching tomorrow.

“We know we’ll be playing Corbin, and they are a good team,” he added. “We just need to be ready to play.”

Garland’s players were more than ready to play Tuesday.

South London scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back, as Anthony Garland, Tucker Warren and Colsen Hays each scored.

North Laurel Green did manage to cut its deficit to 3-2 in the second inning before seeing South London add a run in the bottom of the second inning.

Garland’s squad put the game away by sending 11 batters to the plate while scoring eight runs to wrap-up the 12-2 victory.

“We played well today,” Garland said. “We didn’t play well against Clay County, but that’s over now, and we came back and played really good today. We made eight or nine errors against Clay County, but played better defensively.”

South London also hit the ball better.

Garland’s squad finished the game with nine hits, as Warren had three hits to lead the way. Warren, Garland and Hays each scored twice in the win.

“We are a very good hitting team,” Garland said. “We hit the ball good tonight.

“I like our chances. We just have to continue to hit the ball, and our pitching needs to come through.” he added.

It’s never too early to talk about what games will be the big ones for the Tri-County high school football fans to watch this upcoming season. I’ve tried to narrow my list down to 10 games, but honestly, it really wasn’t easy to do — but I did manage to do it.
Let’s just say things should be very entertaining, and interesting, for you the fan this season.

The word hero is used a little too loosely for my taste these days.
To be honest, it’s been used way too much for a long time and I’m just as guilty as the next guy.
