OLDHAM COUNTY — So far, so good for Bill Abner’s North Laurel Senior League All-Stars. North Laurel will be participating in today’s Senior League State Tournament championship game today at 8 p.m. against Richmond, who defeated Beaver Creek Tuesday, 10-1.
North Laurel advanced to the state title game by defeating South Oldham, 12-9, and Richmond, 8-2, respectively.
“I was really happy with the way we played against Richmond,” Abner said of his team’s 8-2 win. “We cut down on errors and our pitchers only had two walks.”
North Laurel entered the fifth inning ahead, 5-2, but managed to score three runs to put the game away.
“After we did that, I decided to take Dylan Messer out and save him. He only allowed one run and did a great job for us.”
North Laurel opened the game up with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and cruised to the six-run victory, as Messer and Ray Hays each finished the contest with two hits apiece. Messer picked up the win while Austin Rudder also delivered a double.
Against South Oldham, Hays allowed only one hit before being taken out, as North Laurel scored in every inning during the three-run victory.
Rudder delivered a double and a triple in the win while Messer finished the game with a double.
“I like our chances (in the state title game),” Abner admitted. “It’s right there for us. Our pitching is set up and every one of our pitchers are eligible.
“Whoever we play, they’ll be tight on their pitching,” he added.
Even if North Laurel loses today, they will still have another chance to win the state championship on Thursday, since they are the only team remaining with no losses.
