North Laurel survives sixth-inning scare, keeping title hopes alive

By Les Dixon / Sports Editor

PRESTONSBURG  — Jason VanHook’s North Laurel Minor League All-Stars kept their state championship dreams alive by holding on to defeat host Prestonsburg Tuesday, 8-7.

North Laurel jumped out to an 8-3 going into the fifth inning before seeing Prestonsburg rally to make the score, 8-7. After getting out of the fifth inning jam, North Laurel got into another jam in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Prestonsburg loaded the bases with no out while seeing their No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 hitters come to bat with no avail. After two strikeouts and a pop out, VanHook’s squad survived the inning and pulled off the one-run victory.

“On a scale of one to 10, I was a 15,” VanHook said after seeing Prestonsburg load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. “Not to mention, they had their four, five and six hitters up and their five hitter had already hit a three-run blast over the fence.

“But my guys pulled it out and won,” he added. “We still keep our hopes alive, but we’ve got to win tomorrow.”

North Laurel (1-1) will play winless Morgan County (0-2) with a Final Four berth on the line at 5 p.m.
