CORBIN — The Corbin Lady Redhounds picked up their fourth straight win Tuesday, knocking off Knox Central 5-2 in the first game of a doubleheader against the Lady Panthers and Bell County.
Coming off Monday’s perfect game, Corbin’s Hannah Hart wasn’t quite as sharp, but she managed to get the win after giving up two runs on four hits through seven innings of work.
Offensively the Lady Redhounds weren’t quite as potent as they were Monday, when scoring 15 runs in five innings. They did take advantage of seven Knox Central errors to go along with five hits, led by Sydney Reynolds’ one-hit, two RBI effort, to get the win.
Afterward, Corbin coach Chris Hart was pleased with the win, praising his team for an errorless effort on defense, while admitting he wasn’t surprised with the lackluster output at the plate.
“I’ll take the win and I’m really happy with the way we played on defense,” Hart said. “We’ve had problems defensively at times and it’s good to see the girls make the routine plays when they’re supposed to.
“After having such a big night at the plate Monday, I wasn’t really surprised with the way we hit the ball today,” he added. “A lot of times you come in and have to make adjustments and it takes a little time, but we scored some runs and were able to pick up the win.”
Knox Central took an early lead after Hannah Hart walked the Lady Panthers’ first batter of the game. Dadrionna Smith made Corbin pay when she stole first, advanced to third on a passed ball and came in to score on an RBI single by Hannah Campbell.
The Lady Redhounds got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Amber Allen singled to center, bringing pinch-runner Harleigh Grubb in from second to tie things at one apiece. Katie Bernardo took advantage of an errant throw to score on the play, giving her team the 2-1 lead.
The Lady Redhounds pushed the lead to 3-1 on the next play as Allen scored from third as Hannah Hart reached base on an error, extending the lead to 3-1.
Knox Central managed to trim the gap to 3-2 with a run in the top of the third, but that’s as close as they could get.
Corbin stretched its lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Reynolds singled to score Grubb and Kelley Farley. That’s all the room the Lady Redhounds needed as Hannah Hart set Knox Central down in order in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the win.
Corbin picked up a 5-2 win over Bell County in the second game of the doubleheader, making it a clean sweep Tuesday.
