WHITLEY COUNTY — The Whitley County Lady Colonels had no time to dwell on Monday’s sluggish effort against Williamsburg, welcoming Middlesboro to town Tuesday.
Brandi Smith led the way for the Lady Colonels, pouring in 18 points to lead her team to a 49-34 win over the Lady Jackets. Taylor Dingess added 15 and Maria Johnson chipped in 9.
Whitley County head coach Larry Anderson said he was pleased with the way his team battled back from Monday’s effort, but admitted there is still plenty of work to be done.
“I felt like we had a little more continuity to what we were doing tonight and it showed,” Anderson said. “With having to bring new kids in and changing the offense and plays we were running, the kids are adjusting and starting to get comfortable in their roles.
“Some of the young kids are gaining confidence in what they’re doing, which is always good,” he added.
The Lady Colonels jumped ahead early, but Middlesboro was able to stay close thanks to Blair Green, who scored six of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter. Despite Green’s effort, Whitley County held a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Neither team could seem to find the mark on offense in the second quarter, but the Lady Colonels used a 9-5 effort to push the lead to 25-18 at halftime.
A 12-7 third quarter extended Whitley County’s lead to 42-25 with eight minutes to play in the game.
The Lady Colonels closed out the contests outscoring Middlesboro 12-9 in the final period, securing the 49-34 win.
