NORTH LAUREL – The North Laurel Jaguars snapped a three-game skid Saturday as they knocked off Whitley County 75-55 in the Inaugural United States Energy Basketball Showcase.

Eighth-grader Peyton Broughton led the way for the Jaguars, racking up 19 points in the win, while Jake Allen added 15 and Austin Rush tallied 10.

On the other side of the court, Whitley County senior Boston Bryant led all scorers with a 23-point showing. James Sasko chipped in 10 points for the Colonels as the pair were the only players to reach double figures for Whitley County. The loss snaps a two-game streak the Colonels had established.

North Laurel head coach Brad Sizemore said he was pleased with the way his team played as a unit to beat a team that had been playing well of late.

“This was a good team effort and we got a win over a good team that had been playing really good of late,” Sizemore said. “We came out in the second half with a lot of energy, which allowed us to press them and force some turnovers, which were the difference in the game.”

The Jaguars took an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and were able to double that lead after outscoring their opponent 21-18 in the second quarter to make the score 32-26 at the midway point.

North Laurel continued to put distance between itself and Whitley County in the third quarter, using a 14-10 third-quarter effort to push the gap to 46-36 with eight minutes to play in the game.

As the fourth quarter got underway, the Jaguars stepped on the gas offensively, eventually outscoring Whitley County 29-19 in the period to give the Jaguars the 75-55 win.

The victory puts the Jaguars back at .500 as they improved to 11-11 overall and 5-7 against 13th Region competition. Whitley County falls to 5-14 on the season and are now 4-7 against 13th Region foes.

Both teams will be back in action Tuesday when the Jaguars travel to Leslie County and Whitley County hosts Knox Central.
