NORTH LAUREL — After knocking off Rockcastle County in the opening round of the Legacy Nissan Shootout, the Whitley County Colonels have dropped two straight games, including Saturday’s 56-51 loss to Pineville in the third place game of the tournament.

The Colonels got a pair of 16-point efforts from Michael Powers and Boston Bryant Saturday, but it wasn’t enough for the win. Only three other Whitley County players scored in the game, none of them reaching double figures.

Whitley County struggled early as it only scored six points in the first eight minutes of the game and trailed 16-6 after the first quarter.

Things didn’t get much better in the second quarter as Pineville extended the lead by one point and held a 27-16 margin as the teams headed to the locker room at halftime.

Whitley County managed to play the Mountain Lions even in the third quarter, but still trailed by 11 (40-29) as the fourth quarter got underway.

The fourth quarter became a free throw contest as time wound down. Whitley County connected on 13-of-15 from the charity stripe, while Pineville made good on 8-of-11 attempts.

The Colonels outscored Pineville 22-16 in the quarter, but in the end it wasn’t enough to dig them out of the 11-point hole they found themselves in at the beginning of the period.

Pineville was led by John Simpson’s 16 points, while Seth Jeffrey and Jacob Skinner each added 11 for the Mountain Lions.

Whitley County will be back in action Thursday when the Colonels travel to Nelson County to take part in the Nelson County Classic. The Colonels will face Adair County and Kentucky Country Day in their first two games.
