Stage set for Friday's title games; Dr. Pepper vs. Teco Coal, Athletics vs. Cubs

CORBIN — By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

CORBIN — The stage is set for today’s championship double-header as the Corbin Little League will decide its Little League and Minor League Tournament champions.

Thursday’s semifinal games almost went off without a hitch before Dr. Pepper pulled off the upset with a 6-5 win over the top-seed in the Little League field, Davis Salvage. TECO Coal knocked off State Farm, 9-5, in the first semifinal of the evening Thursday. With Thursday’s games in the books, the stage is now set for Friday’s finals between Dr. Pepper and TECO Coal at 8 p.m.

In Minor League action it was the Athletics coming away with a 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks to advance to the finals. They’ll face the Cubs, who are still unbeaten on the year following a 12-3 win over the Red Sox Thursday night.

The Minor League Championship game is schedule for 6 p.m. at Rotary Park.

State Farm managed to outhit TECO Coal 10-6 for the game Thursday, but eight runners left on base turned out to be their downfall as the fell, 9-5.

After grabbing a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, TECO added three runs to the margin in the top of the third.

State Farm cut into the lead in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-1, but TECO added three more in the top of the fourth to push the gap to 7-1.

Although they managed just one hit in the first inning, a number of Davis Salvage miscues gave Dr. Pepper a 3-0 lead before all was said and done in the inning.

Davis Salvage responded in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs and eventually tied things up in the third inning.

Dr. Pepper struck for two runs in the top of the fourth inning when Boston Hardesty came around to score on a passed ball, followed by an RBI single off the bat of Cameron Hinson to push the gap to 5-3.
