Yellow Jackets pick up second consecutive win, beat Barbourville in OT, Corbin, KY

CORBIN — By Chris Parsons / Sports Editor

WILLIAMSBURG — Although there’s still a week to go in the regular season, Monday’s showdown between Barbourville and Williamsburg had a postseason feel to it.

After being fouled on a last-second heave from half-court, Williamsburg’s Chase Lowrie made good on a free throw with no time on the clock to give the Yellow Jackets a 56-55 overtime win.

The victory is the second straight for the Yellow Jackets and fourth out of the last six games, improving Patrick Robinson’s squad to 13-15 on the season.

After the win, Robinson gave credit to both teams for the effort and said he felt like his squad was fortunate to come away with the win.

“We did a lot of things not very good,” Robinson said. “All in all I’m proud of our guys because any time you can beat Barbourville and a Dinky Phipps coached team, you’re doing something.

“I’m proud of our guys and the way they toughed this game out to get the win,” he added.

Despite the fact his Tigers led for most of the game, Phipps said he didn’t feel like his squad deserved the win based on their effort.

“We don’t deserve to win because we made too many mistakes in crucial situations down the stretch,” Phipps said. “We don’t listen in timeouts and when you don’t do that, it makes it tough.

“We had things going our way and we were attacking the goal and scoring,” he added. “We went five straight possessions with either a bad shot or a turnover and I don’t care who you’re playing, you can’t win like that.”

The Tigers took a 15-4 lead in the first quarter and never trailed until a basket by Lowrie put the Yellow Jackets on top, 52-51, with just under a minute to play in regulation.
