North Laurel moves on

By Les Dixon / Sports Editor

NORTH LAUREL — Kevin Houston’s North Laurel Little League All-Star fastpitch team moved one step closer to winning the District championship by knocking off Leslie County with ease, 24-0, on Tuesday.

North Laurel has been on a roll since the tournament began, knocking off rival South London, 6-2, before cruising past Knox County.

The win over Leslie County will now set up a winner’s bracket showdown between Houston’s squad and the Clay County/Corbin winner Thursday at 6 p.m.

North Laurel jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back, as Jazz Jervis and Jade Williams combined to pitch four scoreless innings.

Both Williams and Becca Riley each collected an inside-the-park-home run in the win.

“The girls stayed focused again and we came out and got some runs early and that was big,”Houston said. “We continued to play good defense. We weren’t as sharp as we had been on defense, but we came out and hit the ball well and had a great game. It was also another solid team effort. Everybody contributed and hit and we were able to generate some runs early.”

Houston admitted a big key is to get one step closer to winning the District 4 championship and they are right on course at the present time.

“We’re one step closer and we have all of our pitching,” he said. “All three of our pitchers have pitched well and they have thrown consistent strikes and kept people off-balanced,” he said.

“We feel good going into the winner’s bracket finals and we’ll face a good lefty in either way we go there with Corbin or Clay,” Houston added. “We just have to get our girls ready and get them focused again for another big game.”
