Lady Panthers' head coaching spot up for grabs

KNOX CENTRAL — According to a statement sent out by Knox County Schools’ Director of Public Relations, Frank Shelton, the position of head coach of the Knox Central Lady Panthers is being posted as open for 10 days.

Shelton sent a press release Monday regarding the position.

“The decision is a personnel action and we are unable to provide further comment at this time,” he stated. “Coaching positions are considered at-will and are not tenured track positions. The position has been officially posted and interested and eligible candidates are now invited to apply.

“The position will be posted for a total of 10 days, then the committee will begin the review of applicants,” he stated. “The committee will consist of the superintendant, Knox Central principal, athletic director and a member of the community since Knox Central does not have a site base council.”

Despite the fact the position is posted as open, that doesn’t mean the Lady Panthers’ most recent head coach, Darrin Mills, won’t be considered for the job. Mills has been at the helm of the program since the 1999-00 basketball season, compiling a 166-268 record over the course of 15 seasons. Mills’ squads have posted three winning seasons (20-10 in 2005-06, 17-14 in 2006-07 and 18-12 in 2011-12).

While there wasn’t much that could be said about the process, Knox Central Athletic Director Jeff Canady was able to put a time frame on how quick the powers that be want to fill the position.

“We’d like to have somebody in place by the time summer basketball comes around,” Canady said. “We feel like it’s important to get someone in there that will be able to get a routine established and get things going.”

Shelton’s statement also pointed out that Canady would be talking with returning players to get a grasp of what kind of coach would be the best fit for the program.

“Our athletic director will be talking with the team in the upcoming days to determine characteristics of the type of person they want in their next head coach,” he stated.

Shelton also pointed out that the opening does not impact the past head coach’s teaching position in the school district.
