Hart's perfect game leads Corbin to win

CORBIN —

By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

LOG MOUNTAIN — Corbin’s Hannah Hart was perfect against Bell County Monday, facing 15 batters through five innings in the Lady Redhounds’ 15-0 win.

Hart racked up nine strikeouts and walked none, while her defense backed her up as they played an errorless game in the field.

Offensively, Corbin exploded for 11 runs in the fifth inning, turning what was a 4-0 game into a 15-0 blowout heading into the bottom of the inning, setting the stage for the big finale.

Hart didn’t disappoint either, striking out the side to end the game.

After the win, Corbin coach Chris Hart gave just as much credit to his defense as he did to his pitcher for the rare feat.

“This was a team effort tonight, so I’m proud of the entire team,” Chris Hart said. “When you talk about a perfect game, anything can happen and usually does to prevent it. You can have hit batters, walks, errors on the defense and a lot of different things, so this is special.

“Hannah did a good job tonight and she had her pitches working,” he added. “Our defense was excellent too and they played the way I think they’re capable of playing every night out there.”

The Lady Redhounds took a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI double by Whitley Gatliff and a walk by Sydney Reynolds to score Kelley Farley.

All was quiet until the third inning when Katie Bernardo scored to push the lead to 3-0, followed by a fielder’s choice off the bat of Lindsey Barton that brought Amber Allen in to make the score 4-2.

Corbin continued to cruise as they put together an 11-run inning in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Coach Hart said he was especially pleased with the way his team closed the game out because he challenged them offensively heading into the fifth inning.

“I challenged them to get enough runs end the game in five innings at the end of the fourth and they came through,” he said. “We did a good job of staying focused offensively, especially considering what was going on with us on defense, knowing we hadn’t allowed a hit.”

Corbin improves to 16-11 on the season and will welcome both Bell County and Knox Central to town today for doubleheader action starting at 5:30 p.m.
