Lady Colonels hope to use season struggles as building block

CORBIN — By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

The Whitley County Lady Colonels have struggled this season and head coach Amanda Moses will make no bones about it.

Coming into the season, Moses said she expected her squad to take some lumps with a tough 13th Region schedule on tap. With a record of 7-14, the Lady Colonels have not had the best season, but she said her squad is improving and that’s the goal.

“We knew coming in this was going to be a tough year,” Moses said. “With the youth and inexperience we have, you have to expect that and just try to keep the kids positive and moving in the right direction.

“I think we’ve made some strides in some areas of the game, while we continue to struggle with some things,” she added. “You just try to stress to the kids that eventually these tough times and games are going to pay off and as they move along, they’re going to be a better team because of it.”

Other than a six-game losing streak, the Lady Colonels have struggled to gain any kind of consistency on the field. They haven’t won back-to-back games all season, but have won two of the last three with a loss to Jackson County sandwiched between wins over Leslie County and Williamsburg.

Whitley County is 4-8 against 13th Region foes and 2-3 in 50th District play. A win over Corbin today (weather permitting) would put them in a tie for second in the district seeding. Moses said she knows that anything can happen when it comes to rivalry games, but she was quick to point out that her team has to hit the ball if they expect to be in any game.

“First thing I want to point out is the fact that I cannot stand to use a pitching machine, so our kids always take batting practice against live pitching,” Moses said. “I just feel like the kids are too smart to use a machine in the fact that they can time those machines and give you a false reading as far as where they are when it comes to hitting the ball.

“We try to express the importance of hitting the ball and we tell them that it doesn’t matter how well you play defense, if you can’t hit the ball and score runs, you aren’t going to have a chance at winning any game,” she added. “Part of our problem is we just haven’t hit the ball well enough to win a lot of games.”

For example, in nine of the Lady Colonels 14 losses, the team has scored two or fewer runs. In two more of those losses, they managed to score three.

As a whole, Whitley County has scored 5.5 runs per game, while giving up just under eight for a difference of about 2.5 per game.

While she admitted the offense hasn’t done its part, Moses said pitching has also been a struggle for her young squad as well.

“We knew that our kids would have a rough time this season, but they’re improving,” Moses said. “As with every other area, you just try to keep them moving forward and stay positive.

“We’ve told our kids that success comes in cycles and we feel like when some of these younger kids mature, our time will come,” she added. “When that cycle comes back around to us, hopefully we can have this group ready to make the best of it.”
