MCCREARY COUNTY — The South Laurel Lady Cardinals responded to Thursday’s loss to Boyle County in style, picking up a 10-2 win over McCreary Central Friday.
Megan Smith pitched seven innings, striking out five batters and giving up one earned run in the process, to earn the win for the Lady Cardinals.
Amber Hyde connected for her 10th home run of the season, but Hagan Burns paced South Laurel at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort.
After the game, South Laurel coach James Burns said he was pleased with the effort and the way his team responded following Thursday’s loss.
“We hit the ball well today all the way through the lineup,” Burns said. “Every player that hit has either a base hit or a sacrifice in the game,” he added. “Anytime you see that kind of production through the whole lineup, you have to be happy.”
South Laurel scored three runs in the first inning, one in each of the third and fifth, and five in the sixth to seal the win.
The Lady Cardinals improve to 19-5 on the season and will have the weekend off unless Burns follows through on a joke he tried to pull on his players.
“We’re off for the weekend unless you have a kid going to prom, if you do it’s going to be more work,” Burns said. “I joked with my players and told them we were going to have a 7 a.m. practice Sunday morning before church, but I don’t think they bought it.”
