A Laurel County couple accused of sexual abuse of a minor was found competent to stand trial after a competency hearing was held in Judge Tom Jensen’s Laurel County Circuit courtroom Friday.
Dustin Eugene Brummett, 26, and Charlene Brummett, 37, face several charges involving sexual abuse of a minor.
Dustin Brummett faces four counts of first-degree rape and two counts of third-degree sodomy, as well as other related charges. Charlene Brummett faces four counts of first-degree complicity to commit rape and two counts of third-degree complicity to commit sodomy, and other related charges.
Dustin Brummett is currently being held on a $250,000 cash bond, while Charlene Brummett’s bond is set at $25,000 cash. A request for bond review and modification for both Dustin and Charlene Brummett was made by their attorneys on Friday. That request is currently under review by the judge, according to Laurel County Court documents.
Dustin Brummett is represented in court by Public Defender Mike Brophy. Charlene Brummett’s defense attorney is Barbara Carnes.
The couple was handed a 15-count indictment on these charges in December. Charges against the couple stem from multiple incidents, which occurred from June 1, 2012 through Oct. 26, 2012, according to court documents.
Both Dustin Brummett and Charlene Brummett have a pre-trial conference set for Oct. 3, and a jury trial set for Oct. 15, at 9 a.m.
