Lots of changes at South Laurel since 2005

The Way It Is

CORBIN —

The hiring of Ryan Nolan as the new South Laurel athletic director made me sit back at my desk for a few minutes and realize just how many changes have been made with South Laurel High School’s athletics since 2005.

Why am I singling out South Laurel and why am I singling out 2005?

Well, it just so happened I was wanting to write a column about changes and South Laurel was on my mind once I found out about the hiring of Nolan. So I figured I would start out with South Laurel and throughout the next month or two touch on Barbourville, Corbin, Knox Central, Lynn Camp, North Laurel, Whitley County and Williamsburg High Schools.

But why 2005?

Well, that has to be one of, if not the most successful athletic calender years South Laurel High School has had.

The boys basketball team won the Sweet Sixteen championship while the girls basketball team reached the Sweet Sixteen Final Four.

But that’s not all.

The softball team advanced to the fastpitch state tournament while the volleyball team reached state tournament play as well. Jep Irwin guided the football team to one of its most-successful seasons by going 9-3 and advancing to the second round of the state playoffs while Chris Hibbard’s boys soccer team reached the state tournament.

Five teams reached the state tournament level and the Cardinal football team hasn’t won a playoff game since.

That’s pretty impressive, so you might say 2005 was the year of the Cardinal.

But since then there have been a lot of changes at the coaching positions. Yes, it’s been eight years, but let’s take a closer look.

There is only one mainstay that is still head coach of their respective team and that’s Konnie Snyder, who has turned in many successful seasons with the Lady Cardinal basketball program.

So let’s take a look at the changes by each sport.
