South Laurel's Davis excited about upcoming G.J. Smith Showcase

CORBIN — By Les Dixon / Sports Editor

South Laurel boys basketball coach Jeff Davis announced the Cardinals will be hosting the G.J. Smith Showcase on Saturday, Nov. 30 in honor of the former South Laurel athletic director and baseball coach who passed away last year.

“After losing G.J. last year it was a shock to everybody, and he meant so much to the school and the community and we wanted to keep his name going in the things we do here. So we wanted to hold this basketball showcase in his name and honor him and his family,”  Davis said.

Davis decided to contact coaches that had worked at South Laurel in the past, and in return, he received an overwhelming response of teams wanting to participate in the six-game scrimmage, one-day event.

“We’ll have Brad Sizemore, Steve Wright and coach (Shawn) Thacker coming back with their teams. I believe it will be great for everyone involved,” Davis said.

Sizemore and Thacker both were assistant coaches under Wright, who guided the Cardinals to a state championship in 2005.

“We wanted to get people to come to this that had ties with G.J.,” Davis said. “I believe it’s going to be a great event.”

Corbin and Boyd County will tip things off at 12:30 p.m. while East Jessamine and Jackson County follow at 2 p.m. Two teams that have reached the state Final Four during the past two years (Southwestern and Montgomery County) will tip-off things at 3:30 p.m. while North Laurel will face-off against defending state champion Madison Central at 5 p.m. Thacker’s Rowan County Vikings will play South Laurel at 6:30 p.m. and two of the state’s top 10 teams for the upcoming season (Knott Central and Henry Clay) will play at 8 p.m.

“We’ve got some very good match-ups and I believe everyone will be happy,” Davis said. “It’s going to be a great day of basketball. We’re still in the early stages, but I’m really happy with what we’ve got set up. We’re going to put out a first-class event, and make it very special for G.J.’s family.”
