LONDON — The North Laurel Jaguars may have come into the 49th District Championship game against Corbin as the underdogs, but Mark Acampa's team left the game with the trophy after a 2-0 win.
The win marked the first time the Jaguars have won the district tournament in at least the past 12 years, Acampa said.
"I'm not really sure about prior to that, but I'm sure it's the first one in that time frame," he said. "I'm so proud of this team in the way they came out here and had confidence in what we were trying to do.
"Corbin is a good team and we knew that we needed to come out fast and try to get on the scoreboard early on if we wanted to keep the game at our pace," he added. "We were able to punch a few in the goal in the first half and that allowed us to dictate our pace and do some things we wanted to do such as keep the ball away from their scorers and limit their shots."
North Laurel jumped ahead early when Josh Carter was able to find the back of the net in just second minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead.
It didn't take long for the Jaguars to strike again as Levi Seidel scored in the seventh minute of the match to push the lead to 2-0 with less than 10 minutes gone by in the match. From that point, the North Laurel gameplan worked as the Redhounds were unable to take advantage of several attempts on goal during the first and second half.
