Jackets have a chance to pull off district four-peat

CORBIN — The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets have a chance to secure their fourth straight district championship with a road win over Lynn Camp in Week Nine action.

The Yellow Jackets are 5-2 overall, and a perfect 2-0 against district foes, and a win over the Wildcats would secure Williamsburg's fourth straight district championship, which would be the longest current district championship streak in the Tri-County.

It's not going to be easy though.

When Lynn Camp and Williamsburg meet, you can throw the records out the window.

But one thing you can't ignore is the Yellow Jackets' dominance in District 6 play and against Lynn Camp. When it comes to winning against district opponents, go no further than Williamsburg.

Jerry Herron's squad ran their district win streak to 12 straight after upending Berea at home Friday, while improving to 18-1 against opposition dating back to 2007. Their lone loss came on Oct. 9, 2009 when the Yellow Jackets dropped a 14-12 decision to Campbellsville.

Matter of fact, Williamsburg has won five district titles during the past six years.

The Yellow Jackets have won their seven past meetings against the Wildcats, and haven't lost to them since a 67-8 setback on Oct. 28, 2005.

So what's been the formula of success? I'd say solid skill players, combined with some of the best linemen in the Tri-County, and a pretty darn good coaching staff.

This season the Yellow Jackets beefed up their schedule, playing the likes of Wayne County and North Laurel, who are considered two of the stronger teams in their respective classes.

With that said, top-notch offensive and defensive line play along with a stellar defense are another reason why Williamsburg is on the verge of winning its fourth straight district crown.

You also can't forget about the Yellow Jacket offense — the bread and butter of Williamsburg's success.

Coming into the Yellow Jackets' game against Berea, senior quarterback Dalton Sizemore led his team with 626 rushing yards and five touchdowns while throwing for 3,133 yards and 39 touchdowns. Tailback Jefferson Patrick had 499 yards on the ground and nine TDs and what's even more impressive? Seven different players have tallied a rushing touchdown this season.

Both Skyler Griffith and Corey Shelton continue their dominance at the wide out position. Griffith had 61 catches, 1,176 receiving yards and 13 TDs going into the Berea game while Shelton had 63 catches for 1,084 yards and 20 touchdowns.

If Herron's squad can continue its impressive district play, who knows how far they can advance in the playoffs, but they've got to get past Lynn Camp first.

The word hero is used a little too loosely for my taste these days.
