CORBIN — South Laurel continues to struggle and the Corbin Redhounds took advantage by defeating the Cardinals, 2-0, Thursday.

The Redhounds (4-2-1) got a goal by Lucas Canineu midway through the first half and never looked back, as South Laurel (2-8) struggled to find the back of the net and was shut out for the sixth time this season.

“I know I keep saying this, but we are so young,” South Laurel coach Amber Hensley said. “We just struggled again.”

The Cardinals were coming off a 7-0 win over Middlesboro, but the momentum couldn’t carry over against the defending region champion Corbin, who despite playing with some starters due to injuries, still managed to pull out its second straight win and fourth shut out during its past five games.

“I didn’t think our pace of play was where it should be,” Corbin coach Armando Cima said. “We just came off a very good win against Southwestern, but tonight I thought we played a little sloppy — like we weren’t as sharp.

“We’re managing a lot of injuries right now,” he added. “We’ve got at least four starters out, but it’s good to get a district win without some of our starters playing.”
