Lady Cardinals blank Boone County during 3-0 win

SOUTH LAUREL — Todd White’s South Laurel Lady Cardinals continue to impress.

The Lady Cardinals improved to a perfect 3-0 on the season by defeating Boone County Saturday, 3-0, despite being down to only 14 players due to injuries.

“I was really worried going in because Boone County is a good team, and it was hot, and we were down to a limited number of subs,” South Laurel coach Todd White said. “We’ve had several girls quit during the summer and we had some out today, so we only had three subs and I thought the heat would really be a factor.

“Like I said, I was really worried, but we managed to get a big win,” he added. “This was a very big win for us.”

South Laurel took control early and never looked back, as Karli Parker continued her impressive play by scoring two goals in the first half.

“I believe they thought since they were coming to eastern Kentucky, they might not get a challenge, but we were ready to play and they ran into a buzzsaw today,” White said. “Karli scored two goals in the first half and we controlled the game.”

White said his team’s defensive play was key in the win. South Laurel has outscored its opponents 17-3 so far this season.

“Our defense played great,” he said. “This is the best we’ve played defensively, including camp and the pre-season. We really played great out there.

“The girls covered for each other and Shelby Davis, a freshman, played well — we didn’t miss a beat,” White added. “Ariel Rudd also played well and Bailey Miller, our goalkeeper, did a fantastic job, too.”

Parker added her third goal of the game in the second half, as the Lady Cardinals cruised to the three-goal win.

“Karli had another good game, and we had a lot more scoring opportunities, but didn’t capitalize,” White said. “Kristen White and Meredith McCowan had good shots on goal, but just missed.”

South Laurel will try to improve to 4-0 on the season Tuesday with a game at home against Southwestern.

“Today’s win was big,” White said. “We just want to continue to improve. Any time you can beat a team that is close to Cincinnati and in the Florence area, it’s big. They’ve got very good teams up there, but we were just ready and focused to play.”
