South Laurel commits 10 errors during 8-0 loss

CORBIN —

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The South Laurel Lady Cardinals’ struggles continued Tuesday during play in the Ripken Experience by dropping an 8-0 loss to Horseheads, N.Y.

The Lady Cardinals followed Monday’s seven-error effort during a 13-2 loss to Carolina Forest, S.C. by committing 10 against Horseheads.

“We’re just not playing well,” South Laurel coach James Burns said. “I don’t know if it’s the turf or what. It bounces higher here, but that doesn’t change the fact we need to be ready to play, too.

“I knew coming down here we were going to play top teams and they were very good, but we’re just not competing right now.

“We’re not giving up — we are just not doing a lot of things we normally do,” he added. “I don’t know if it’s that there is too much of different things going on or what. We wore in to it more today.”

Horseheads connected with only six hits off pitcher Hagan Burns, but the 10 errors turned out to be South Laurel’s Achilles’ heel.

“It was Whitley County all over again,” Burns said about his team’s loss to Whitley County last season. “We were just making way too many errors — it’s terrible.

“You know Hagan pitched well,” he added. “She only allowed six hits and didn’t give up an earned run. We’ve got to be able to hit the ball better, though. We only had one hit. Hopefully we can turn things around tomorrow.”
