NFL season also means it's time for Fantasy Football drafts

CORBIN — As the NFL season slowly approaches, so too does the Fantasy Football season.

If you’re not a Fantasy Football fan or participant, please move along to the next article as this piece will most likely do you no good and when you’re finished, you’ll most likely be cursing me for wasting a few minutes of your time.

A lot of people put a lot of time into Fantasy Football and that’s perfectly fine, so long as you’re not doing it on company time. As for me, I had to put a lot of research into writing this column, which means the fact that my work computer’s browser history is full of Fantasy Football searches is not going to get me any trouble.

Of course, I could be just writing this column to keep myself from getting into trouble since about a half-dozen people have walked by and spoke to me while I was reading different informative columns on who to draft, when to draft them and exactly which players to avoid this season.

The truth is I’ll never tell, but I will share what I feel like are a few of the most important things to consider when it comes to Fantasy Football, whether it’s to play or not, the right team name or who to draft first.

From this point, I’ll save time and space by using FF instead of spelling out Fantasy Football. With that said, here goes.

•Choosing the right league

The first and most important thing in my opinion is choosing the right league to participate in.

If you’re new to FF, you probably want to avoid any league that has fees or charges for entry unless it’s among friends. The reason for this is that a lot of leagues charge per transaction, which means by season’s end you could very easily rack up a list of charges owed the length of your arm.

The other thing to consider is try and get into a league with friends, that way if you win you’ll have plenty of people to talk trash to. Keep in mind if you fail miserably, those same friends are free to bash you and most likely will do so.

• Choosing a team name

A lot of people may disagree, but a team’s name is almost as important as the players on the team.

Why you ask? I’m not sure, but I do know that I beat a lot of teams with names I didn’t like over the last couple of seasons. I’ve listed a few ideas for team names this season that I pulled from the Internet.

If you like current events you could go with ‘The Butt Fumblers’ (for those Mark Sanchez “fans”) ‘Not My Mama’s Fantasy Team’ (a nod to Paula Deen and her son’s Food Network show that is still on the air. The premise of the show centers on her son Bobby recreating Deen’s classic fat-laden recipes in a healthier manner) ‘Running With Rex’ (Rex Ryan recently ran with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain; and survived) ‘Parole Models’ (no real explanation needed if you’ve been following the news this summer) and Denver Drunkards (see above).

My team is the ‘Heisenberg Bluerocks’. The name is a tribute to AMC’s hit show Breaking Bad, which is one of my favorite shows on TV.

• Who to draft?

I’ve learned the hard way that the worst way to draft FF players is by choosing players you like, especially if your luck is like mine when it comes to teams you cheer for.

It never fails that I’m lucky enough to draft one of my favorite players (see Matt Forte in 2011) and he ends up with a season-ending injury just a few weeks into the season. A lot of people don’t give much thought to the FF draft guides that are printed, most likely because there are a blue million of them, but picking one up will only help you come draft day.

Well that’s it for information from me. A lot of you will disagree with what I’ve said, but I never said I was an expert. Heck, I even admitted the only reason I wrote this piece was because I didn’t want to get in trouble for searching for draft rankings at work.

Good luck this season and have fun!
