KNOX CENTRAL — Andrea Hillard’s Barbourville Lady Tigers entered the season with a lot of big expectations, but never seemed to ever get anything going until it mattered most.
The Lady Tigers turned in two of their best efforts of the season during the 51st District Tournament, scoring 91 points during Monday’s win over Pineville, and turning in a 58-46 winning effort over No. 1 seed Lynn Camp during Thursday’s 51st District championship game.
The Lady Tigers trailed by two points at halftime (23-21), but used a 21-5 run in the third quarter to put the game away while capturing their second straight 51st District title in the process.
“This is huge,” Hillard said. “I told the girls in the locker room at halftime, the first two minutes of the second half were key. We needed to go out there and take control or we would be in trouble.”
Barbourville did just that, as Laken Woolum hit three three-pointers during the period while the Lady Tigers connected on five-of-seven three-point attempts during the stretch to take control of the game.
“That was very big,” Lynn Camp coach Richard Jones said. “They came out and hit some big shots and were able to take control of the game. We can’t play like the way we want to when we are battling foul trouble the entire game. Both Jessica (May) and Merita (Burke) battled foul trouble the whole game and it hurt us. They hit some big shots in the third quarter.
“I’m disappointed we lost, but I’m not upset at the kids because this is a great group,” he added. “It’s a tough loss, but we just have to saddle up and get ready for the region, and hopefully get a win and make it to the region semifinals.”
Hillard admitted winning the district title the second time is just as good as the first.
“It feels great,” she said. “The big thing is that we’re playing our best right now, and it’s a a very good time. The girls really played well tonight. I thought experience played a big factor.
“We were able to hit some three-pointers in the third quarter, and that opened some things up,” she added. “We’re playing some good ball right now.”
Kelsey Erslan led the way with 24 points for the Lady Tigers while Woolum finished with 13.
