Twice as Nice

Corbin wins First Priority Tournament for second straight year

CORBIN — By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

WHITLEY COUNTY — Heading into the 2013 Lady Colonels First Priority Tournament this past weekend, Corbin head coach Liberty Roberts said she would like to be able to defend her team’s championship from a year ago.

Not only did she get her wish to defend the title, but her team also brought home this year’s championship trophy with a 2-0 (25-18 and 25-23) win over the host team, the Whitley County Lady Colonels.

Roberts, whose team went a perfect 7-0 in the tournament, said she was proud of the way her team battled, especially after having to overcome several obstacles throughout the tournament.

“The one thing I was really proud of was the fact that we had to pull a couple junior varsity players up to the varsity roster and they played so well,” Roberts said. “Some of those girls had never played in a varsity match, but they did really well, along with the rest of the team.

“I felt like we played very consistently and I think our serve receive had really improved,” she added. “We’ve worked a lot on using the floor better and we’ve been able to take away some of our errors, which always makes a difference.”

On the other side of the championship game, Whitley County head coach David Halcomb said while he was pleased with his team’s effort, the loss in the finals was disappointing.

“We played well all tournament and I thought the tournament went well for everyone involved,” Halcomb said. “Our kids did a great job for us all they down to the finals and then we just kind of got outplayed.

“Corbin is a good team and we’re going to have these kinds of games every time we play each other, so I wasn’t really surprised,” he added. “Hopefully the loss will put our girls on their toes as we get set to close out the season and head into postseason.”

Landry Jung helped pace the Lady Redhounds with 15 assists, 11 points on serve and a pair of aces. Carley Jackson added seven digs and three aces, while Charlotte Hampl tallied 10 digs and six kills.

The word hero is used a little too loosely for my taste these days.
To be honest, it’s been used way too much for a long time and I’m just as guilty as the next guy.
