WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg Lady Jackets have struggled this season, winning just two of their first 25 games.
Coming into Monday’s showdown with North Laurel the Lady Jackets had won two in a row with wins over Model and Pineville last week.
After a 50-36 decision over the Lady Jaguars, Williamsburg has now won three straight for the first time under head coach Andrea Ellis. The last time the Lady Jackets won three in a row was on Feb. 19 of 2010 under Jim Rains.
“It’s a good win for us and more importantly it is three in a row,” Ellis said. “It wasn’t very pretty on either end of the floor, but our kids did a good job following our game plan.
“North Laurel came out strong and (Kendall) Ellington really went at us early,” she added. “We were able to settle in and start making some of our shots as the game went on and we were able to get the win.”
Williamsburg’s Carissa Conlin led the way for Williamsburg with 18 points, while Terrah Davis added 11. North Laurel’s Ashley Raines paced the Lady Jaguars with nine points.
Both teams struggled in the first half, but the Lady Jackets managed to grab a 21-12 lead at halftime.
A 15-8 third-quarter effort by Williamsburg pushed the gap to 36-20 as the third period came to a close.
North Laurel managed to outscore the home team 16-14 in the fourth quarter, but the gap was too big for the Lady Jaguars to overcome as they fell 50-36.
After the loss, North Laurel head coach Eddie Mahan said the best thing his team can do is put Monday’s game out of their minds, especially with a game scheduled for today.
“With such a quick turnaround, we have to just forget about this one,” Mahan said. “We just didn’t play well because this was a very winnable game for us.
“Hopefully we can just turn it around tomorrow and play better basketball,” he added.
Williamsburg will close out the regular season Friday against Barbourville at home. North Laurel will host Middlesboro today at 7:30 p.m.
