WHITLEY COUNTY — The Whitley County Colonels can’t seem to catch a break. After missing out on a chance to win against Williamsburg at the buzzer Monday, a turnover after Middlesboro’s lead had been trimmed to 66-63 with 9.8 seconds to play send Jerry Overbey’s squad to its 18th loss of the season as they fell, 69-63.
Overbey said he was pleased with the way his team came out and played after Monday’s loss, but admitted that bad possessions and the inability to take control doomed the Colonels in the end.
“We came out with some intensity and we did that last night, but we just had some bad possessions in key situations,” Overbey said. “We made some bad passes and just turned the ball over, but they were doing that on the other end also.
“What it comes down to is we just didn’t grab the bridle as they say and take control,” he added.
The Colonels trailed 62-53 late in the fourth when a 10-4 run trimmed the gap to 66-63 thanks to a Devin Rutherford rebound and put-back with 34.6 seconds to play in the game.
The Colonels tried to extend the game by fouling Middlesboro’s Blake Davis, sending him to the free throw line with a chance to make it a two-possession game.
Davis missed both free throws, setting the Colonels up with a chance to tie the game as time wound down.
The Colonels couldn’t find a lane to the basket, nor could they get free for a three-pointer before giving in to the pressure defense of the Yellow Jackets.
Middlesboro’s Austin Poindexter recovered an errant pass by Luke Woods and dribbled the length of the court before a layup and foul put Middlesboro on top 69-63.
Powers led the way for Whitley County with 18 points, while Boston Bryant added 14 in the loss.
The Colonels will be back in action Friday when they travel to Pineville.
