Cardinals drop third straight after falling in double overtime

GEORGE ROGERS CLARK — South Laurel led by as many as 18 points during the second half Saturday, but couldn’t hold on, as Harrison County rallied to knock off the Cardinals in double overtime, 71-70.

The loss marked the second time this week the Cardinals (7-11) led by double digits in a game, but couldn’t hold on. South Laurel (7-11) has now dropped three games in a row entering today’s matchup against 50th District rival Corbin.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 22-18 lead in the first quarter and built a 40-28 lead at halftime, but that’s when Harrison County began chipping away at the Cardinal lead.

Jeff Davis’ squad was outscored 33-21 during the second half, including 10-4 in the fourth quarter.

Zac Baxter led the Cardinals with a 21-point effort while Matt Slavey scored 14 points and Zach Jones added 13 in the loss.
