RED BIRD — Dinky Phipps’ Barbourville Tigers moved one step closer to winning their third straight 13th Region All ‘A’ Classic by defeating Lynn Camp Tuesday, 76-37.
The Tigers started slow, but once they got going, they were tough to stop. Barbourville led 21-1 at the end of the first quarter and 34-21 at halftime before putting the game away by outscoring Lynn Camp, 42-16, during the second half.
“It was ugly starting out, but we managed to begin to put it away in the third quarter,” Phipps said. “All we wanted to do in the first half was shoot three-pointers, but once we settled down, we played good.
“We got in early foul trouble again, but our younger guys stepped up and played good,” he added. “This was a good win for us.”
Lynn Camp couldn’t get anything going offensively, according to coach Clyde Dixon.
“We played about as cold as the weather on Red Bird mountain,” he said. “Barbourville is a tough match for us, but when we shoot 14-of-50 and turn the ball over 21 times, it’s hard to stay in the game with any team.
“We did a better job holding (Alexander) Phipps to three points after he shot lights out against us the last time we played, but they have several shooters. Barbourville loves the All ‘A’ Tournament and should be able to win this one.”
The Tigers were led in scoring by Devon Mills’ 17-point effort, as 11 different players scored for Phipps’ squad during the win.
Barbourville will be back in action Thursday against Middlesboro in the semifinals of the 13th Region All ‘A’ Classic Tournament while Pineville will square-off against each other at 6 p.m.
