One-for-two

Yellow jackets beat Heritage, fall to Uppperman in Holiday Classic

WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets downed Heritage, Tenn. in a 59-45 win in the opening round of the Williamsburg Holiday Tournament.

The Jackets were led by dynamic duo of sophomore guards in Corey Shelton and Skylar Griffith. Shelton had a game-high 23 points, while Griffith added 16.

The win evens Williamsburg's record at 3-3 on the season and gives them two wins in a row. Jackets' coach Patrick Robinson was pleased with his team's effort in the game.

"Overall I thought we played pretty solid. We shot the ball decent," said Robinson. "We were able to get the lead in the second half and hold on to it. It was a good win for us."

The game was nip-and-tuck for most of the first quarter, with Williamsburg pulling ahead to a 15-14 advantage after one. The Jackets tightened up their defense in the second quarter, limiting Heritage to just seven points. Williamsburg's full-court press was a major problem for Heritage, forcing several turnovers and bad shots. At halftime, Williamsburg held a 27-21 lead.

"We changed our defenses up a little bit, trying to keep them off balance. I thought our ball pressure was pretty good for the most part and we were able to get quite a few turnovers," said Robinson. "Really, when they started to make a few runs we were able to turn them over and that is what allowed us to keep a 10-to 12-point lead for most of the game."

The Jackets had six players in the scoring column in the game. Robinson said he saw a lot of good things from his young team.
