The Corbin Redhounds may have been led by Trevor Hill’s 22 points Wednesday night, but the six that Kevin Goins scored in the final 15 seconds turned out to be the most important.
The Redhounds knocked off Farragut, Tenn., 73-69, in their opening round matchup of the Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament despite trailing 69-67 with 34 seconds to play.
Goins connected on a three-pointer with 15 seconds to play to put his team on top 70-69 and then after a steal at half court, made good on a layup attempt as he was fouled extending the Redhounds’ lead to four points after the made free throw.
After the win, Corbin head coach Tony Pietrowski said he was glad to see Goins finish the game in such fine fashion.
“I’m so happy for that kid (Kevin) because he’s been grinding and working and trying to do the things that I’ve asked him to do and improve in other areas,” Pietrowski said. “We know he can shoot and score some, but I’ve been harping on other things and he’s really been working at that.
“I’m just glad to see him rewarded for that effort,” he added. “We’ve been talking about situations and trusting a teammate and making the extra pass and that’s what they did at the end of the game.”
The Redhounds fell behind 15-14 at the end of the first quarter, but took the lead as the buzzer sounded for halftime on a three-pointer by Hill, putting Corbin on top 33-32.
Corbin stepped on the gas in the third quarter, extending the lead to 53-47 at the end of the third quarter thanks to a 6-0 run to close the quarter.
The Admirals got the jump on Corbin in the fourth quarter, using an early 12-6 run to grab a 59-56 lead, but the late surge by the Redhounds was too much to withstand.
