NORTH LAUREL — The North Laurel Jaguars picked up an easy win on Monday, defeating the McCreary Central Raiders 14-1 in five innings of action.

It was a much-needed win for the Jaguars, who have been in close games for the duration of the season.

“We needed an easy game like this. It seems like we’ve been fighting for our lives lately, in all of these close games, so it was time for us to have a game like this,” said North Laurel Coach Darren McWhorter. “When you get games like these, you have to take advantage of them.”

The Jaguars went scoreless in the first inning, before breaking the game open in the bottom of the second, scoring seven runs. Senior Marcus Carson picked up a single in the inning, and knocked home one run. Most of the other Jaguars’ runs came by way of walk or passed balls.

“We did a really good job tonight at being patient at the plate, and that’s how we were able to score that many runs,” said McWhorter. “A lot of runs came from walks and then guys hitting them in. Sometimes you can swing your way out of games like this by going up there and swinging at everything, but we did a good job tonight.”

North Laurel would go on to score seven more runs in the game, while holding the Raiders to just one run on the night. Sophomore Logan Mallory led the Jaguars at the plate with two hits and three RBI, while Ethan Maxey and Carson added one RBI each. Eight different players scored for the Jaguars.

Sophomore pitcher Byron Rice put in a complete game effort for the Jaguars. Rice allowed just three hits on the night, while striking out two and walking three.

“We had a young pitcher in there in Byron Rice. He pitched the entire five innings and managed to keep his pitch count low,” said McWhorter. “He was throwing everything around the plate. He did a really good job for us.”

North Laurel will be back in action today, taking on Jackson County at home.
