North Laurel coach Darren McWhorter admitted he knew before his team made the venture to South Carolina his team would play some top-notch teams and he was right.

The Jaguars managed to go 1-2 in the Hanahan Invitational, but their play was good enough to make McWhorter believe it was a successful trip.

“We wanted to come down here and get better and I believe we did that,” he said. “It was a successful trip for us. Overall, I thought we played really good and the teams we played were really good, but on that note, we do have things we need to work on.

“Base running hurt us at times and we need to do a better job of defending when people are on base,” he added. “It’s just a lot of little things right now, but overall I am happy with the way we played.”

McWhorter admitted the biggest thing he wanted out of the road trip was to get his team better before post-season play begins.

“That’s the biggest thing. This will prepare us for down the road,” he said. “We’re not going to see much better pitching than we saw here. I know this will prepare us for teams like South Laurel, who is very good.

“We played some very good teams,” McWhorter added. “Coming down here, you’ve got to learn to compete against teams like that and I believe we did that. We still have a lot of work to do, but I am pleased with what I saw.”
