SOUTH LAUREL — South Laurel’s Amber Hyde continued her torrid pace at the plate by delivering her third home run of the season while leading the Lady Cardinals to a 6-5 win over Garrard County Friday.

“It was a trap game for us,” he said. “We played a good game last night and we are leaving for our spring break trip tomorrow, so this was a tough game to get ready for.

“We didn’t hit the ball really well,” he added. “They’ve got some good pitchers, but our defense was solid and we were able to get a win.”

South Laurel (4-1) took advantage of two errors in the first inning and scored a run to lead, 1-0, but Garrard County answered with a run of its own in the top of the second and tied the game at one apiece.

The Lady Cardinals’ lead grew to 3-1 after Brittany Vanderventer’s single to right field was misplayed, which allowed Bailey Miller to score from first while Vandeventer touched all of the bases and scored.

The Golden Lady Lions scored another run in the top of the fifth, but Hyde’s two-run shot in the bottom of the inning pushed her team’s lead to 5-2.

South Laurel added another run to make the score 6-2 before Garrard County made one final rally by scoring three runs during the final two innings, but Hagan Burns shut the door on the lady Golden Lion comeback attempt.

Megan Smith picked up the win on the mound while Burns was credited with the save.

“This was a good win for us,” Burns said. “We just need to continue to improve on this. Last year, honestly, we would have lost this game. When we weren’t on, we didn’t win.”
