Five-run sixth inning leads to Cardinal loss

CORBIN — By Les Dixon / Sports Editor

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The South Laurel Cardinals ended their stay in the Hanahan Invitational with a 1-2 record after seeing Wando, S.C. rally to score five runs in the sixth inning while picking up a 10-7 win.

The Cardinals (7-3) scored early and often against Wando, but couldn’t hold off their opponents’ late rally.

“It was a tough loss,” South Laurel assistant coach Kyle Mink said. “We got off to a good start, but just couldn’t pull it out.

“They had the one good inning and it was good enough for them to get the win,” he added. “We just walked too many in the end, but we are learning things (from this trip) that will allow us to get better.”

South Laurel fell behind 3-1 before scoring three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-3 edge. Wando scored a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at four apiece before seeing the Cardinals score a run in the fourth inning while adding two more in the fifth to take a 7-5 advantage.

It looked as if South Laurel was going to grab its second win of the invitational, but Wando scored five runs in the sixth inning and never trailed again.

Alex Sears led the Cardinals with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, which included a triple and three RBIs, while Daniel Neal went 2-for-4 with a double.
