Whitley’s Mariah Jackson and Brian Kurzeika advance to State

SOUTHWESTERN — North Laurel, South Laurel and Whitley County’s boys and girls track teams participated in Thursday’s Class 3A, Region 7 track meet and came away with mixed results.

In girls’ team action, Madison Central placed first with 174.5 points while Southwestern finished second with 88 points. Whitley County turned in a seventh place effort (26 points) while South Laurel (23.5) finished eighth and North Laurel (6) placed 10th.

On the boys’ side, Pulaski County captured top honors with 191 points while Madison Central finished second with 171. Whitley County placed fifth with 30 points while North Laurel turned in a seventh place effort with 14 points and South Laurel finished 10th with five points.

Whitley County did have two student-athletes that will participate in next week’s state track meet. Mariah Jackson will be competing in the 200 Meter Dash while Brian Kurzeika will participate in the 300 Meter Hurdles and High Jump.

Jackson turned in a second place effort in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 27.54 while Madison Central’s Larryn Brooks won first place honors with a time of 26.85.

Kurzeika finished second in the High Jump (6-0), as Madison Central’s Daniel Guy won with a jump of 6-02. Kurzeika also placed second in the 300 Meter Hurdles with a time of 43.01 while Madison Central’s Levi Knutson won top honors with a time of 42.97.
