CORBIN — Corbin’s Jaclyn Jewell and Sydney Ledington captured the 13th Region Girls Doubles championship by winning 6-2, 6-3 over North Laurel’s Pooja Kanthawar and Caroline Moore on Wednesday.
“This was a good win for us,” Corbin coach Donnie Head said. “North Laurel puts a lot of pressure on you and I thought they did that today. We managed to settle down and started returning serve better which turned out to be big for us.”
Jewell and Ledington join Corbin’s Josh Jewell and Seth Heinss as 13th Region doubles champions while Whitley County’s Danny Butcher and South Laurel’s Neha Rao won the boys and girls 13th Region singles titles on Tuesday.
The girls title game was postponed Tuesday thanks to Mother Nature after seeing Jewell/Ledington grab the first set, 6-3.
The Corbin duo jumped out to a 3-0 edge during the second set before seeing Kanthawar and Moore rally to tie things at three apiece.
“They managed to come back and tie things up and they had a chance,” Head said. “If they could have went ahead 4-3, then who knows what could have happened. Then maybe we are looking at a super tie-breaker.
“We did better and adjusted and kept the ball low,” he added. “I thought we played well.”
Now Corbin will shift focus to both the Sectionals for team play and next week’s state tournament.
“I think we they (Jewell and Ledington) will do well,” he said. “We’ve never had anyone get past the quarterfinals and I believe they can get to the semifinals and once you get that far, who knows what can happen. (As a team), now we’re looking at the Sectionals. We haven’t got past that, but this year I believe we will.”
