NORTH LAUREL — If you’re a fan of good pitching, Friday’s showdown between Corbin and North Laurel was the game to be at.

Corbin’s Kevin Goins and North Laurel’s Logan Mallory went head-to-head for seven innings, both going the distance for their teams, but Mallory eventually got the win thanks to runs scored in the first and fourth innings by the Jaguars.

Mallory gave up six hits, striking out four in the process, while Goins gave up two runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Weston Greibel and Austin Thompson each went 2-for-3 in the win, while Marcus Carson and Cole Lewis each added a hit apiece. Corbin leadoff man Derek Terry finished the game 2-for-4 to lead his team in the hit column.

After the game, both coaches talked about the quality of play from both teams, but Corbin coach Rob Ledington said his team has to learn how to capitalize on key moments of the game.

“Every time out there Kevin (Goins) is going to put us in position to win the game and today was no different, but it’s the same things that’s been biting us in the butt all season,” Ledington said. “We continuously leave the bases loaded with two outs, and I’ll bet it has happened 15 times this year, but until we can get runners in when they’re on the bases this is going to happen.”

North Laurel coach Darren McWhorter said it was an all-around good game from his team and praised both pitchers for their efforts.

“We played well in all aspects of the game and both teams got good pitching,” McWhorter said “It’s good to see our kids play solid baseball and get the win, especially considering how well the Goins kid pitched.”
