WHITLEY COUNTY — The Whitley County Colonel and Lady Colonel tennis team had a busy week, but the results didn’t turn out as well as head coach Colby Wilson would have liked.

Whitley County only managed to win one match Wednesday (Jade Bland/Nan Zhang doubles) when Middlesboro came to town, despite a solid start by the team of Chris Tan and Matthew Douglas in the only boys’ match of the day. After grabbing a 6-2 win in the first set, the pair fell 0-6 in the second and lost s super tiebreaker 4-6.

“Our match against Middlesboro turned out to be a much better day for the Yellow Jackets,” Wilson said. “We only played one boys doubles and they came in too overconfident after winning the first set 6-2. Middlesboro's Robbins/Francis team scrapped their way back in the second set.

“The day continued to decline as the girls came off the court,” he added. “We were too slow and undriven to win against a very strong girls team at Middlesboro that day, not winning a single match with the exception of our Jade Bland and Nan Zhang match at No. 3 doubles.”

Things didn’t get much better for the Whitley County Thursday when it welcomed Corbin to town. Corbin came away with a 7-2 on the girls’ side of things, while the Redhounds pulled off the 6-3 win on the boys’ side.

“Corbin came to us on Thursday and the Redhounds proved to be too deep in our second meeting, with each of our teams only taking two matches a piece for the day,” Wilson said. “Both Danny Butcher and Pete Comparoni dominated their singles at the No. 1 and No. 2 spot against Connor Maguet and Andrew Reedy.

“The girls had a better performance against Corbin than the previous meeting,” he added. “We still have several things to work on in the following week before the regional tournament and the athletes are looking forward to playing each match to the best of their abilities.”
