ASBURY COLLEGE — The Corbin Redhound tennis team participated in the Asbury Tennis Tournament over the weekend and turned in a solid performance — reaching the finals in the two singles and doubles tournaments.

“The boys showed up for the Asbury tournament today,” Corbin coach Nickie Dixon said. “There was some great competition.  All four of our teams made it to the finals. We were the only school to accomplish that. That shows us how deep our team is.”

Whitley County’s Danny Butcher won the Singles Purple Draw Tournament by defeating Corbin’s Connor Maguet, 6-0, 6-0.

Corbin’s doubles duo of William and Harrison Reedy won the Isaiah Draw by picking up a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Henderson County’s Angermeier/Stallings.

Singles Tournaments

Purple Draw

Whitley County’s Danny Butcher took home first place honors with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Corbin’s Connor Maguet. Butcher won his first round match over West Jessamine’s Andrew Monell, 6-1, 6-0 and advanced to the title game with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lawrence County’s Jacob West.

Maguet won his first round match, 6-4, 6-2 over Henderson County’s Chandler Marshall and defeated Villa Madonna’s Marius Van Melle 6-0, 6-4 in semifinal action.

“Connor played a tough draw today,” Dixon said. “He fought hard in two close matches that he won. He played smart tennis today and wore down his opponents to capture his wins. He also got his first look at our region favorite for singles, Danny Butcher. While Danny beat him, I was glad Connor was able to get a look at him before we play them in season. Connor played well. I was very happy with his performance today.”

White Draw

Corbin’s Andrew Reedy reached the finals before falling to Sayre’s Allen Prewitt, 6-4, 6-2. Garrett knocked off Whitley County’s Pete Comparoni to reach the title game with a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 win in semifinal action. Comparoni turned in a third place finish by defeating West Jessamine’s Grant Wells, 6-2, 6-3.

Reed reached the championship game by picking up a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over Villa Maddona’s Zach Kennedy while defeating Wells in semifinal action, 6-1, 6-1.

“Andrew Reedy also had a great tournament and made it to the finals,”  He had to fight hard in his first match winning it in three sets to a tough player. He was very dominate in his second match then ran into a tough Henderson County player in the finals. Overall it was a great day for Corbin tennis. I was very happy with our performance.”

Doubles Tournaments

Eagles Draw

Corbin’s Seth Heinss and Josh Jewell reached the championship before losing to Henderson County’s Johnson/Williams, 6-1, 2-6, 7-10.

Heinss/Jewell won their first round match with ease, 6-0, 6-0 while picking up a 7-6, 6-2 win over Villa Madonna’s Gibson/Gibson in semifinal action.

“Josh and Seth played some great doubles today,” Dixon said. “They were aggressive and kept control of the net. They made it to finals before losing in three sets to a very strong Henderson County team.”

Whitley County’s Douglas/Tan lost their first round match 6-1, 6-0.

Isaiah Draw

Corbin’s William and Harrison Reedy cruised through three matches while winning the Isaiah Draw in the process. The duo lost only six games in three matches and captured the doubles crown with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the title game over Henderson County’s Angermeier/Stallings.
