Whitley sweeps South Laurel

CORBIN —

By Les Dixon / Sports Editor

SOUTH LAUREL — The Whitley County Colonel and Lady Colonel tennis teams both picked up wins by defeating South Laurel in tennis action.

The Colonels picked up an easy 9-0 win while the Lady Colonels managed to hand the Lady Cardinals a 6-3 loss in match play.

“Our match at South Laurel was a very cold and windy one, but turned out to be a great day for Whitley tennis,” Whitley County coach Colby Wilson said. “The boys had a very dominant day only dropping 10 games overall and taking the match, 9-0.

“Similarly, the girls stepped up their game for the second match of the season to top the Cardinals 6-3 for the win,” he added. “Emily Vanderpool also won the extra match against Anna McCowan, 8-4. The girls only dropped three matches for the day. Two of those included an always-strong Neha Rao and the other was a close match between Brittany Fuson and Emily Turner. Brittany suffered a hard fall and had to take a medical timeout near the end of the match and just could not close when she returned, but fought hard in the loss. We have several things to work on in practice for both squads and we are very excited for the rest of the season and watching each player improve.”

The word hero is used a little too loosely for my taste these days.
To be honest, it’s been used way too much for a long time and I’m just as guilty as the next guy.
