Kyle Mink’s Lady Jaguars pull away with three-run sixth inning, Corbin, KY

NORTH LAUREL — Kyle Mink’s first game as head coach of the North Laurel Lady Jaguars started off on a high note, as he saw his Lady Jaguars hand Lexington Catholic a 5-1 loss Saturday.

After battling to a scoreless tie with the Lady Knights for the game’s first two innings, North Laurel responded with a run in both the third and fourth innings before putting the game away with a three-run sixth inning.

“I’m happy with the win,” Mink said. “We are young, but we came out and played well. Even with how inexperienced we are, to compete like we did, is really big for us.

“Lexington Catholic has a good team,” he added. “I thought Madison (McDaniel) pitched four good innings, and Mikayla (Viars) came in and pitched three good innings.”

McDaniel held the Lady Knights at bay, surrendering only one run, while Viars silenced Lexington Catholic’s bats during the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

“With us just opening the season, we didn’t want to put any strain on any of our arms,” Mink said. “I thought our pitchers did very good.”

North Laurel’s Cassidy Mason connected with a run-scoring single in the third inning to give her team an early 1-0 edge while NaTasha Colwell came through with another run-scoring hit in the sixth inning, as the Lady Jaguars plated three runs to put the game away.

“They cut it to 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning, but we were able to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning,” Mink said. “We had some big hits in the inning.

“I thought to come out and get a win like we did was pretty good for how young we are and how we responded,” he added. “Overall, I was very pleased.”

Mink’s squad won’t have much time to rest, having to play Whitley County at home Tuesday before hosting 13th Region pre-season favorite Corbin on Thursday.

“We’ve got two big games in front of us this week,” Mink said. “We’re going to be able to see where we are at after these two games this week.”
