BARBOURVILLE — Dinky Phipps' Barbourville Tigers got off on the right foot in 51st District play by upending Lynn Camp with ease Friday, 77-35.
The Tigers were led by Brent Perry's 18-point scoring effort, as the hot-shooting guard scored 14 points in the first quarter.
Jason Mills also reached double figures with 17 points while Brandon Gray added 11.
“I'm proud of my team for coming out and doing what we needed to do,” Barbourville coach Dinky Phipps said. “All in all, I'm proud of them.
“We came out and shot the ball well in the first quarter and took control of the game,” he added. “I wish we could have defended better, but overall, I'm pleased.”
The Tigers jumped out to a 24-10 lead in the first quarter thanks to an 8-of-15 shooting effort from the floor, while Lynn Camp struggled offensively, turning the ball over four times while hitting on only five-of-18 shot attempts.
Barbourville continued its torrid pace of shooting in the second quarter by connecting on nine-of-14 shot attempts and 17-of-28 in the first half, propelling its lead to 49-14 in the process at halftime.
The Wildcats continued to struggle, connecting on only 2-of-11 shot attempts during the period and seven-of-29 during the first half.
Phipps' squad outscored Lynn Camp 13-9 during the third quarter while cooling down to a five-of-12 shooting effort.
“We came out kind of sluggish in the third quarter and didn't hit many shots,” Phipps said.
Barbourville wrapped the game up in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 42-point win.
“The big thing is that we won a district game,” Phipps said. “You don't want to finish last in the district.
“We also want to be prepared for the rest of our district games, and the All 'A' coming up,” he added. “We did a good job tonight.”
Justin Hammonds led the Wildcats in scoring with nine points.
