Corbin ready for district tourney

CORBIN —

By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

Despite falling to North Laurel in the Area 2 Tournament this past Monday, the Corbin 12-year-old All Stars advanced to next week’s district tournament.

Wins over Clay County and South London will not only give Corbin a chance to play at the district level, but they’ll do so on their home field as they try to run the table out of the loser’s bracket to earn a spot in the state tournament.

As the district tournament gets closer, head coach Shane Creekmore said he likes the way his team is playing, especially coming off the first-round loss to North Laurel.

“Starting off in that first game we struggled at the plate,” Creekmore said. “We just couldn’t put together that string of hits in an inning that allows you to score some runs.

“We got great pitching in Monday’s game, as well as the game we played on Tuesday, in addition to some timely hitting that allowed us to score some runs,” he added. “Our defense stepped up and played well all week and that’s what you want as far as backing up your pitcher.”

After the 4-3 extra-inning loss to North Laurel, Corbin run-ruled South London in an 11-0 game. The following night, Corbin was able to continue its hot hitting in a 13-5 win over Clay County in the winner’s bracket finals.

During the two wins Corbin got solid pitching efforts from Jayson Stancil, Colin Kidd and Christian Gosselin. Matthew Creekmore pitched Monday’s loss and held North Laurel to two runs through five innings.

Shane Creekmore said when it comes to his pitcher’s effort, he’d take a group of quality arms over a team full of sluggers any day.

“I’ve been a baseball guy for a long time and it’s my experience that good pitching trumps good hitting most of the time,” he said. “I’d much rather have a group of kids that can throw strikes and get people out on a regular basis to go along with guys that can hang around and scrap out a few runs.”
