CORBIN — The North Laurel 11-12 year-old All-Stars used a four-run first inning while building a 7-0 lead during its 9-5 win over the Clay County Tuesday while Corbin stayed alive by eliminating South London with an 11-0 victory.
North Laurel 9, Clay County 5
The win advances North Laurel to the District 4 Tournament while Clay County falls to the loser’s bracket and will play again today at 7 p.m.
Ben Philpot led the way for North Laurel by going 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Alex Binder went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Hutton Shepherd led the team with two RBIs and a hit while Cory Hodge and Chase Pennington each drove in a run.
North Laurel led 4-0 after the first inning and added two more in the third inning to increase its lead to 6-0. They added another run in the seventh inning and looked to be in cruise control until Clay County added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score, 7-2. North Laurel added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning before seeing Clay County try to put together a rally in the bottom of the inning, but it could only manage to score three runs.
Corbin 11, South London 0
Corbin jumped out on top with two runs in the first inning before blowing the game open with a nine-run, six-hit fifth inning.
Nick Yeager led the way for Corbin with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate while scoring three times while Jordan Fox and Peyton Tirey each drove in two runs apiece.
Corbin pitcher Jayson Stancil picked up the win on the mound while tossing five innings and limiting South London to only one hit in the win. He also finished the game with five strikeouts. Matthew Dalton had South London’s lone hit of the game.
