Perry Central hits three-pointer at the buzzer to beat Corbin

CORBIN — By Les Dixon/Sports Editor

CORBIN — It looked as if Jennifer Parsons’ Corbin Lady Redhounds had all but locked up a second place finish in the Cumberland Falls Lady Redhound Invitational Saturday against Perry Central.

Lady Redhound Sarah Ashley knocked down one-of-three free throw attempts with 0.9 left that gave her team a 62-61 edge, but Perry Central managed to throw the ball to mid-court and call timeout with 0.6 remaining and on the ensuing inbounds play Whitney Back caught and released a shot from three-point range that went in, handing Corbin a crushing 64-62 defeat.

“I’m just really disappointed with the ending of the game — it is what it is,” Parsons said. “I’m not convinced the shot was even good. I hate to see the game get to that point and to end that way.

“There were a couple of questionable calls in the end,” she added. “The clock was at 0.3 when they called the timeout, but the referees decided to put 0.6 on the clock and then they hit the shot.”

The Lady Redhounds trailed by as many as eight points in the game and three points (61-58) with less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter before rallying thanks to solid defensive pressure.

Corbin’s Kayla Wilson hit two free throws with 1:00 remaining to make the score 61-60 and Ashley connected with a free throw after a technical to tie the game at 61 apiece with :35 remaining.

Ashley found herself at the free-throw line again after getting fouled from behind the arc before Back’s three-point shot (her fifth of the game) won the game for Perry Central.

“It’s a disappointing loss because we were right there,” Parsons said. “We fought back to get to that point but only to be denied. I thought like we also cost ourselves with a couple of turnovers late in the game. But I do believe this is the best defensive game I have seen us play in a long time.”

Corbin limited Perry Central to 21-of-51 shooting from the floor while forcing the Lady Commodores to turn the ball over 19 times.

Kayla Wilson led the Lady Redhounds with 18 points while Miranda Wilson added a nine-point effort. Kayla Rankin led Perry Central with 26 points and Back followed with 19 points.

Kayla Wilson, Miranda Wilson and Ashley were each named tournament MVPs while Brooklyn Ashurst won the Willard Farris 110 percent award.

The Lady Redhounds will be back in action Tuesday on the road against a Bell County squad that handed Corbin a 75-55 loss this past Thursday.
